Map of MOTAT

By Richard Moore

If ever there is a must-see in a city you are visiting then Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology, or MOTAT, has to be right up there.

For within its sprawling 40 acre-site there is a seemingly bottomless wealth of fantastic things to look at, ride on, touch and marvel at.

Actually, MOTAT has counted the things to look at and there are 300,000 of them - including old fire engines, a working railway and tram line (using an old Melbourne W-Class tram), and a World War II airfield with a rare Lancaster bomber in working order.

MOTAT is actually now so big it has been split in two (MOTAT and MOTAT 2) but they are each within easy 500-metre walk or, if you are too tired, hop aboard a tram!

MOTAT has permanent exhibitions on Early Auckland, Pioneers of Aviation , Primary Industries, Road Transport, Tramway and Tramcars while MOTAT 2 has the Sir Keith Park Memorial Aviation Collection, Military Collection and Rail displays.

MOTAT is open every day of the year except Christmas Day from 10.00 until 5.00pm.
