Melbourne Cricket Ground at nightMelbourne is the sports capital of Australia with huge crowds attending major sporting events.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground can hold 100,000 people and is the venue for the famed Boxing Day Cricket test each year.

While cricket is Australia's national sport it is Australian Rules Football that has the drawing power in Melbourne with up to 80,000 spectators gathering to watch their teams play during the home and away season.

Finals matches - particularly Grand Finals - are usually sell-outs.

Aussie Rules is fast, tough and extremely skilful, and it has to be seen to be believed.

Other winter football codes also have their followings with Melbourne having its own rugby union Super 15 side - the Rebels - several national soccer teams, and the champion rugby league side the Storm.

For tennis fans the last two weeks of January are the highlight of the year as the Australian Open kicks off the Grand Slam tournaments.

Played at Melbourne Park the Open is an extremely popular event attract hundreds of thousands of fans over its two weeks.

In March the Formula One circus comes to Melbourne to do battle on its terrific Albert Park Lake circuit.

If horse racing is your thing then the Spring Racing Carnival should be on your list of things to attend. Race meetings are held from mid-September through to late November and include the Caulfield Cup and the race that stops a nation - the Melbourne Cup - on the first Tuesday in November.
